ASPCA Pet Loss Support

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) offers a pet loss support program, which helps those who have not only lost a pet, but who are facing the death of a pet, trying to make a decision about euthanization or assisting surviving animals within the family home to cope.

Intended for dog lovers, BARK Pup Loss companion line is located in Ohio. Their lines are staffed by caring dog lovers from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday. They are available to callers throughout the USA and Canada. You can also email. Usual response times are within 24 hours.

Utah State University School of Veterinary Medicine

Utah State University offers phone support from veterinary students from the University, trained by a licensed Psychologist Dr Steven Lucero. Utah State University provides empathic and professional support to anyone with a terminally ill pet, or after experiencing the loss of a pet.

The goal of this service is to help the Veterinary students become more compassionate Veterinarians as well as offering clients support to better cope with the loss of their pet.

You can contact Utah State University via phone or email 24 hours a day. The phones are staffed during the Fall and Spring Semesters from 5pm to 7pm (Mountain Time).

During University holidays or when the University is not in session, the service is still provided, but hours may be limited. Staff and students will continue to check phone and email messages and respond as quickly as possible.

Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice

Lap of Love is a Veterinary Hospice offering in home Euthanasia and a Pet Loss Bereavement Resource Line. Having been part of the end of life community for pets for many years, Lap of Love want to help provide you with support and comfort during your time of loss.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine

Cornell University can provide written information upon request relating to pet loss grief as well as phone support on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

The hotline is manned by volunteer veterinary students, trained extensively by professional grief counselors. Cornell University welcomes callers, not only to assist you with the loss of your pet, but also to help prepare the veterinary students for the emotional grief they may face during veterinary practice.

University of Illinois CARE Helpline

The Companion Animal Related Emotions (CARE) Pet Loss Helpline is a telephone service offering confidential support surrounding grieving the loss of a companion animal or anticipating a loss.

The CARE Pet Loss Helpline accepts calls from 1pm to 6pm Tuesdays and Thursdays. Callers outside these times can leave a message. Calls are usually returned within 24 hours.

The CARE Pet Loss Helpline is staffed by the University of Illinois Grief Counselor and will help you to manage the emotions related to pet loss, listen and support you.

Chicago Veterinary Medical Association

The Chicago Veterinary Medical Association is a not for profit organization that offers a pet loss helpline and support group called “Wings”.

Wings meets on the first Wednesday of every month at 7:30pm. You do not need to make a reservation and there is no charge to attend. The Chicago Veterinary Medical Association will gladly accept donations if you wish to support their cause.

Colorado State University – Argus Institute

Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides, via The Argus Institute, free grief counseling and support to those making end of life decisions or who have lost a pet.

Originally founded in 1984, the Argus Institute program is one of the longest standing support programs, run by clinical counselors.

They offer support to those who are facing difficult decisions, caring for an ill or injured animal or post loss support.

Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine

Michigan State University offers a pet loss support group meeting twice a month. This is located at the Veterinary Medical Center at Michigan State University.

This free pet loss support group provides a safe place for pet owners to express their feelings after the loss of their pet, as they transition into life without their pet. Others share their experiences in a supportive environment.

The Veterinary Social Work Service at Michigan State University also offer short term one on one counseling for a variety of situations, including counseling during pet chemotherapy, emotional support during difficult decision making processes or euthanasia process.

Tufts University Pet Loss Support Hotline

The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University offers a pet loss support line 6pm to 9pm Monday to Friday. 24 hour voicemail is available if outside these hours.

The Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine offer assistance in a caring, supportive and non judgmental way. The lines are staffed by student veterinarians, to help you work through the heartache of losing a pet.

The University of Tennessee Knoxville offers a pet loss support group at the Veterinary Medical Center. Usually held twice a month at the UT College of Veterinary Medicine, 2407 River Drive, Knoxville TN 37996. Please contact the university to confirm the next available dates.

They also offer a pet loss support helpline via phone or email, Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm.
